FC Barcelona: Patience & Persistence

When the football season kicked off in August 2017, FC Barcelona were in a crisis. Everything just seemed to be falling apart. They lost the Spanish Super Cup to Real Madrid (5-1 over two legs), the football world was not fully convinced by new manager Ernesto Valverde, and they had only signed 29 year-old midfielder Paulinho, and right-back Nelson Semedo from Benfica. People were not impressed. This instability was heavily influenced by the fact that they lost Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain for the small fee of€222 million, after weeks of reassurance that he would not leave.Things were looking bleak, and club president Josep Maria Bartomeu was under mounting pressure.

They did manage to sign Ousmane Dembele though, the French wonderkid from Borussia Dortmund, but he soon picked up an injury that set him aside for months, and their other transfer target, Philippe Coutinho, was being firmly held by Liverpool. Luis…
